Man Utd's next steps in Ten Hag transfer plan after huge Leny Yoro boost

The signing of Leny Yoro will not end Manchester United's hopes of landing another central defender.

Manchester United are set to secure their second transfer of the summer, with the Lille defender set to undergo a medical at Old Trafford. The 18-year-old will command a £52million fee, with the Red Devils now holding the advantage after the Frenchman had been expected to join Real Madrid.

United are said to have a limited budget of £50million this summer and have already signed Dutch forward Joshua Zirkzee for £36.5m from Bologna. The club agreed a deal to implement a more favourable release clause.

With players to depart the 13-time Premier League champions including Mason Greenwood, Erik ten Hag could also see more stars added to his squad. United still have ambitions to land another central defender, with the position having been a priority for the club in the transfer market.

Heading into the summer, the club planned to strengthen in the centre of defence, midfield and up front. United still intend to add another defender should they be able to raise funds through sales, according to the Daily Mail.

The club continue to target Everton's Jarrod Branthwaite and Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt. Sporting director Dan Ashworth has seen the Toffees reject bids for Branthwaite, with a £45m offer dismissed.

Everton are hopeful of nearer £70m for the 22-year-old. And the figure United are set to spend on Yoro could strengthen the resolve of Sean Dyche's side.

Ten Hag is more familiar with De Ligt who he coached while at Ajax. It is understood United's boss has already held direct talks with his countryman, with reports suggesting personal terms are already agreed.

German giants Bayern are said to want £42m for the 24-year-old they signed in a deal that could rise to £68m from Juventus.

Speaking last month Ten Hag explained the transfers that would help United progress. The 54-year-old wants to see his side bounce back from eighth place in the Premier League.

"We need to get a striker in to work alongside Rasmus Hojlund," he said. "I also hope we manage to get another central midfielder and also a replacement for Varane.

"Then I think things will look very good for next season - with the caveat that the players are fit and stay fit. Then you can start playing towards the top four with such an eleven. That gives me hope and is also realistic in my eyes."
