Manchester City are proceeding with an £11m deal for Anderlecht left wing-back Sergio Gomez, 21, which is expected to be finalised on Thursday.
City are eager to bring in a new left sided defender after missing out on Marc Cucurella, who joined Chelsea from Brighton.
Having developed at Barcelona's La Masia academy, Gomez joined Borussia Dortmund in 2018 before moving on to Anderlecht.
There have been suggestions that Gomez could be loaned out by City, but a final decision has yet to be made.
Joao Cancelo is often deployed at left-back by Pep Guardiola, but the departure of Oleksandr Zinchenko to Arsenal has left City short with regards to back-up options in that position.
Gomez, who is known for his energy and assist record, made 49 appearances last season, scoring seven goals and assisting on 15 occasions, as he helped Anderlecht finish third in the league.
While at Anderlecht he worked with former City defender Vincent Kompany, who is now in charge of Burnley.
So far in this transfer window City have signed Erling Haaland, Kalvin Phillips and Stefan Ortega.
City commenced their Premier League campaign with a 2-0 win against West Ham and will take on Bournemouth in their next fixture.
