Manchester United failed with a last-ditch attempt to sign Timo Werner, according to a report.

The German forward left Chelsea this week to re-sign for RB Leipzig in a £25million deal after a torrid two years with the Blues.

According to Manchester Evening News, United had a bid for Werner rejected in their latest embarrassment of a difficult summer as the club tries to rebuild under Erik ten Hag.

Werner scored 23 goals in 89 games for Chelsea, but regularly struggled for form despite winning the Champions League with the club.

He rejoined former side Leipzig, from whom he left for London for £45million in 2020, instead of moving to United.

United's difficulties in the transfer window this year have been highlighted on several occasions, headlined by their insistence on bringing Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong to the club.

It seems Erik ten Hag's side have looked elsewhere for now, with the Red Devils closing in on Juventus' Adrien Rabiot in a £15million deal.

Their search for a forward remains ongoing, however, with Hakim Ziyech reportedly now top of the wanted list at Old Trafford.

The Moroccan international played under ten Hag at Ajax, and the two could reunite if United can meet Chelsea's valuation.

The link comes after United were priced out of a move for Ajax's Antony.

With Anthony Martial injured, Cristiano Ronaldo wanting out and Marcus Rashford linked with a move to PSG, United are desperate to bring in a forward player, but are once again struggling to land any targets.

Ziyech could be the answer to their problems, but there is still lots of work to be done before a deal is agreed.
