Manchester United are in talks to loan left-back Alvaro Fernandez to Benfica.

The Spaniard has spent the first half of the 2023-24 campaign on loan with LaLiga side Granada but has failed to nail down a regular starting place.

The 20-year-old has made 13 league appearances but started just five of those and has failed to provide a goal contribution during that time.

Mail Sport understands that the Red Devils are willing to recall him from his loan spell in Spain and will send him to Portuguese side Benfica.

Meanwhile, United are expected to allow Hannibal Mejbri to join Sevilla after Sunday's game with Spurs.

The Red Devils will take on Tottenham at Old Trafford, where Sir Jim Ratcliffe will be in attendance for the first time since his partial takeover.

There's a chance the Mejbri will be needed for the squad on the day, given a number of injuries to the United team currently.

Meanwhile, youngster Joe Hugill has signed a new contract with Manchester United ahead of joining Burton Albion on loan for the season.

The striker has put pen to paper on a deal until 2026 at United with the option of a further year but will now continue his development with Martin Paterson at League One strugglers Burton.

Hugill, who signed from Sunderland in 2020, has been on the bench four times for United this season including for the FA Cup win at Wigan this week.

While his loan was agreed with Burton early in the week, he has been called upon by United to cover for injuries in training. He is in line to go straight into Burton's squad to face Derby County on Monday.
