Manchester United are leading the race to sign forward Cody Gakpo, according to reports.

The 23-year-old is widely regarded as one of the hottest prospects in Europe and is now showing his talent on the world stage, scoring Holland's opening goal of their World Cup win over Senegal on Monday.

He was linked with United in the summer, and, according to CalcioMercato via The Sun, the Red Devils are now keen to reopen talks with the PSV star over a move to the club.

Gakpo is said to have attracted interest from several Premier League clubs including Liverpool, Arsenal and West Ham, but United are reportedly at the front of the queue to pick up their man.

A move broke down in the summer, which led to Gakpo criticising Erik ten Hag's side after deciding to stay in Holland.

He said: 'Last week I thought I was going to Manchester. Then it was "choose another club" and decide whether I wanted to go there. That is not nice for PSV and also not for me, because it felt rushed.'

He claimed he worked 'all summer' on a move to United, and he may now have to do so again with interest reignited.

It is believed Gakpo would cost at least £43million, with United looking for a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo, who had his contract at the club terminated on Tuesday.
