Manr Utd register WORST defensive record by an English side in CL group stage

Manchester United have picked up an unwanted crown.

Erik ten Hag's side have the leakiest defence of any English side in Champions League history after their exploits this season.

The Dutchman's charges shipped 15 goals on their way to nosediving out of the group stages with four points.

Bayern Munich drew the curtains on the Theatre of Dreams' European hopes for another year with a relatively modest 1-0 win on Tuesday night.

It meant that United finished bottom of a European group for only the second time in their history - and what a flickering, heart-in-mouth rollercoaster these six games have been, where everything was to play for until the last day.

The Red Devils are actually among the top scorers in the competition after netting 12 goals but their porous defence, compounded by a series of critical errors, was their undoing.

In the first matchweek, United lost 4-3 at Bayern Munich in a chaotic game which is best remembered for an Andre Onana howler and a lesser-spotted Casemiro double.

Fair enough, you say - no shame in losing to the 11-time consecutive Bundesliga champions.

But the next match brought a shocking 3-2 defeat at home to Galatasaray, as Onana made another blunder, Casemiro was sent off, and the hosts let a lead slip, with Mauro Icardi scoring a late winner.

In the next match, United kept their European flame lit with a dogged 1-0 win over Copenhagen, with Harry Maguire on the scoresheet and Onana making a heroic last-gasp penalty save.

That, however, was to be their only clean sheet.

Matchweek four saw a calamitous loss on the road as Copenhagen hit back with a 4-3 vengeance, with Marcus Rashford given his marching order.

Once again United let a lead slip, as late goals from Lukas Lerager and the ironically named Roony Bardghji lifted the Danish champions beyond cloud nine.

In Turkey in the penultimate match, United were desperate for a win but could only muster a 3-3 draw with Galatasaray in one of the season's most entertaining games.

That night saw another two clangers from Onana, raising serious questions about his status as the club's No 1 goalkeeper.

Tuesday night was the nail in the coffin, a spiritless 1-0 loss at Old Trafford where United had precious little to offer against a safe and dry Bayern outfit.
