Marc Cucurella called up by Spain while Gaya remains in the squad

Getafe have announced that Marc Cucurella has received a call-up from Spain for La Roja's Nations League fixtures against Switzerland and Germany.

These matches will take place in Basel and Seville on November 14 and 17 respectively, with Cucurella making the jump up from being with Spain's under-21s to the senior side.

Jose Luis Gaya remains a part of Luis Enrique's squad for now, despite having suffered a heavy blow to his head during La Roja's 1-1 draw against the Netherlands on Wednesday night. He ended up being replaced by Sergio Reguilon.

The Valencia left-back is waiting to see how things evolve, but a decision has been taken to call up Cucurella nonetheless.

In fact, 40 minutes after Getafe announced that their player would be a part of the Spain squad, the Spanish Football Federation declared that the former Barcelona player will join up with the rest of the group, although Gaya will remain.

Luis Enrique has opted not to take any risks with Gaya due to the nature of the injury he suffered, so Cucurella has made the jump up from playing with the under-21s, who will now take on the Faroe Islands without him on Thursday evening.

Cucurella has played as a left midfielder at Eibar and Getafe in the last few seasons, but Luis Enrique has called him up to play in a position he knows so well from his time at Barcelona: left-back. In the last couple of years he has not played in this role much at all, although he did in the second half of Getafe's game against Villarreal last weekend.

Getafe have a representative in the Spain squad once again, following on from Jaime Mata's call-up in March 2019. Before Mata, three Getafe players had worn La Roja's shirt: Mariano Pernia, Ruben de la Red and Manu del Moral.
