Marco Silva has released a statement thanking Everton supporters and praising the commitment of the club's players after being sacked on Thursday.

The Portuguese's tenure had been brought to an end after the club dropped into the Premier League relegation zone following a 5-2 defeat against fierce rivals Liverpool.

But despite being made to wait for an entire day, which eventually culminated in his departure from Goodison Park, Silva lauded praise on his now former side.

In a statement published by the League Managers' Association, Silva said: 'It has been a real honour to have managed Everton for the past 18 months and I would like to thank Farhad Moshiri, Bill Kenwright, Denise Barrett-Baxendale, Keith Harris, Marcel Brands and the entire board for giving me the opportunity to be part of this special club.

'Thank you to all of the Evertonian fans who always live and breathe the club and show such great passion.

'A special thank you to all of the players, for their professionalism and the commitment they put into their work every day and to the club staff who welcomed me to Finch Farm training ground and made me feel at home.'

The 42-year-old is believed to have accepted the club's decision with dignity at Finch Farm.

Silva became the fourth manager to be axed since Farhad Moshiri became the club's majority shareholder in 2016, and the Iranian billionaire had also addressed Everton's squad directly following a meeting with director of football Marcel Brands and chairman Bill Kenwright.

Duncan Ferguson has been entrusted with the reins for Everton's clash against Chelsea on Saturday.

Sportsmail understands that Carlo Ancelotti is the latest big name, alongside Shanghai SIPG boss Vitor Pereira, to have been added to the club's shortlist of potential replacements for Silva.
