Marko Arnautovic refuses to commit future to West Ham

Marko Arnautovic helped to heap more Nations League misery on Northern Ireland at Windsor Park on Sunday night and then refused to commit his future to West Ham.

Arnautovic, who scored the only goal when these two countries met in Vienna last month, started on the bench due to a niggling knee problem but made a big impact after coming on as a 71st minute substitute.

First, the 29-year-old was involved in a confrontation with veteran defender Gareth McAuley who grabbed Austria's talisman around the throat as they tangled on the ground.

'He tried to choke me,' said the former Inter Milan forward afterwards. 'He tried to fight me. I think it's not good to fight me.'

Then Arnautovic set up a dramatic late winner for Valentino Lazaro with the last kick of the game, squaring an excellent pass in the third minute of stoppage time for the Hertha Berlin player to beat Trevor Carson with a curling effort.

He added: 'Two games in a row was a bit too much but the gaffer asked me to play the last 25 minutes if it was needed, and it was. I'm glad I could help.'

Arnautovic and his representative and brother, Daniel, revealed last week that he wants to play at a higher level than West Ham and came close to leaving the club in the summer, just one year after a £25million move from Stoke.

Asked about his club situation, he replied: 'I don't want to talk about that. I concentrate on West Ham. We have a big game on Saturday against Manchester City and I think only on this game and the next games.

'What my agents and the clubs are talking (about) is not my business. My business is to perform on the pitch, that is what I want to do.'

Northern Ireland's relegation to the third tier of the Nations League had been confirmed before kick-off, but Michael O'Neill's side were denied the consolation of their first point in the competition as they suffered a fourth straight loss in Group B3.

Corry Evans equalised with a deflected effort in the 57th-minute, shortly after Xaver Schlager had fired Austria in front against the run of play, but Lazaro's late strike ended a frustrating campaign in fitting fashion.
