Mata is a PL free-kick master but he's 10 behind Beckham

Juan Mata sparked Manchester United's comeback in their dramatic 3-2 win over Newcastle on Saturday when he curled home a free-kick at Old Trafford.

Mata's left-foot effort was his eighth goal direct from a free-kick in the Premier League since he made his debut for Chelsea in August 2011.

In that same period, no other player has been able to match Mata's tally of eight.

Gylfi Sigurdsson comes closest with seven free-kick goals since the start of the 2011-12 Premier League season, while Wayne Rooney, Christian Eriksen and Robert Snodgrass are each on six.

Mata has 11 names above him on the Premier League's all-time list of free-kick scorers, but he should be able to climb further as eight have now retired and none are still playing in England.

United legend David Beckham is top of the pile with 18 goals.

There is then a big gap to Arsenal icon Thierry Henry and Chelsea favourite Gianfranco Zola who scored 12 free-kicks each in their Premier League careers.

Cristiano Ronaldo, ex-Newcastle winger Laurent Robert, and former Birmingham, Sunderland and Hull man Seb Larsson are tied on 11, while old Leeds left back Ian Harte and one-time Blackburn ace Morten Gamst Pedersen have 10.

First in Mata's sights are Frank Lampard, Jamie Redknapp and Nolberto Solano on 9
