Mauricio Pochettino breaks silence on Wesley Fofana injury with honest Chelsea message

Chelsea news: Mauricio Pochettino has sent his well wishes to Wesley Fofana following his latest setback

The France international saw his 2022/23 campaign plagued by injury following his £70million summer move from Leicester. Now, ahead of the new season under Pochettino, Fofana looks set to miss a large chunk with it highly unlikely he plays again in 2024.

Amid concerns over the severity of his issue, Fofana was left out of the Argentine's pre-season squad set to tour the USA, with Reece James another notable omission, although it was confirmed he missed the flight due to illness. The Chelsea squad have since landed overseas with Pochettino holding a press conference before the Blues face Wrexham in North Carolina on Wednesday.

When asked about Fofana's injury, he said: "Really sad, really bad news. We feel so sad. We can only help him and to be again with the team we know it is tough. We need to help him and wish him all the best. We need to keep going, the competition is there. The competition doesn't wait for anyone and we need to be ready."

On whether he could play again this season, Pochettino added: "I hope yes. You have all of the information that this is difficult. He is evolving in a different way but hopefully his recovery goes very well."

It is currently unclear whether Chelsea will enter the market in search of a defensive addition, but the stance on Trevoh Chalobah looks set to change imminently. The Blues were open to selling the Cobham graduate this summer, but that could now be altered at least for the time being following Fofana's injury.
