McTominay holds key to Man Utd's two-player swoop as transfer talks revived

The sale of Scott McTominay could be critical if Manchester United hope to complete their midfield revamp before the close of the transfer window, with the Red Devils short on funds for both Sander Berge and Manual Ugarte

McTominay’s future has been uncertain throughout the summer, with interest arriving from Fulham and Napoli for the central midfielder. United rejected Fulham’s £20million offer earlier this summer, but the Daily Mail have reported that interest has been revived. Napoli, meanwhile, would prefer a loan-to-buy deal for the Scotland international

McTominay has just one year remaining on his contract with United, albeit the club has the option to extend it for a further 12 months.

A product of United’s academy, the 27-year-old has clocked over 250 appearances for the club since making his senior debut in April 2017. Last season saw him relish his best-ever goal return in the United shirt as he scored 10 times, including winning goals against Brentford, Chelsea and Aston Villa in the Premier League.

However, McTominay could make way to help fund manager Erik ten Hag’s ongoing squad revamp.

United are currently interested in Burnley ’s Berge and Paris Saint-Germain’s Ugarte. United’s initial offer for the Sheffield United defensive midfielder was short of the club’s £30million valuation, while Ugarte is reportedly the preferred choice but any move remains at the mercy of PSG ’s asking price.

Ugarte was ont involved in the French club’s Ligue 1 season opener against Le Havre last Friday amid transfer speculation.

While PSG are reportedly happy to part ways with the midfielder, they are unwilling to budge from their £52million valuation, which is how much they paid Sporting to sign him in July last year.

Ugarte featured in 37 games for the French heavyweights last season as the club won Ligue 1 and the Coupe de France.

Berge has not featured in either of Burnley’s opening two fixtures in the Championship. New manager Scott Parker attributed the absence against Luton in the season opener to a squad injury.

Although Parker had hoped to get Berge back in time for the clash against Cardiff, it ultimately came too soon. Berge moved to the Clarets from Sheffield United last summer but was unable to halt the club's slide back down to the Championship.
