Messi's top 10 free-kicks after Liverpool goal

  /  autty

Lionel Messi added to his incredible free-kick repertoire on Wednesday night with a stunning goal to clinch victory for Barcelona against Liverpool.

It was the fourth free-kick the 31-year-old has scored in 2019, and already it's up there with his very best efforts.

Here Sportsmail chart Messi's top 10 for both club and country.

10. vs Uruguay - October 13, 2012

One of the cheekiest efforts of Messi's career as he rolled the ball under the wall in a 3-0 win. Seven years later he repeated the trick.

9. vs Espanyol - December 8, 2018

It was a free-kick double with one scored at both ends against the same helpless keeper Diego Lopez. The first was a cracker, postage stamped right into the top corner.

8. vs Deportivo La Coruna - December 12, 2015

The best thing about this strike was the reaction of goalkeeper German Lux, who just throws his arm up in disgust as if to say: what could I do about that?

7. vs Espanyol - May 8, 2016

Barcelona were closing in on the title when the two teams met in May. Messi calmed the nerves with a free-kick after just seven minutes. From 25 yards he took the shortest of run ups and just bent the ball into the top corner.

6. vs Colombia - November 16, 2016

Messi helped Argentina’s World Cup campaign with a free-kick past David Ospina. The former Arsenal man was left with no chance as Messi's effort from nearly 35 yards bent in off the underside of the bar. He assisted two more in the 3-0 win.

5. vs Espanyol - March 30, 2019

The Panenka was made for penalties but Messi has customized it to suit free-kicks. He dinked the ball over the top of the Espanyol wall at the end of March and defender on the line Victor Sanchez could not stop it going in.

4. vs Atletico Madrid - February 26, 2012

Everyone was expecting the cross when Messi planted the ball down wide left of the area. But he floated a stunning effort into the top corner to give Barcelona a 2-1 win.

3. vs Alaves - August 18, 2018

Another one rolled under the wall which had jumped two feet in the air. This cheeky maneouvre prompted teams to begin having a player lie down behind the wall.

2. vs Villarreal - April 2, 2019

Messi planted this one into the top left-hand corner with a swerve that took it out and then brought it back in again to kiss inside of the Villarreal post.

1. vs Liverpool - May 1, 2019

Top of the pile because of the occasion. A Champions League semi-final that was in the balance still until he stepped up – it was his furthest out in the Champions League - and he found the very top corner to the appreciation of a raucous Nou Camp crowd. He’s still getting better.
