AC Milan were offered the chance to sign Nemanja Matic in January but decided against the move, according to reports in Italy.
Manchester United were keen to offload their veteran midfielder, who has now entered the final few months of his current contract.
According to Calciomercato.com, AC Milan chiefs Zvonimir Boban and Paolo Maldini decided to make investments elsewhere following United's offer.
United are currently unwilling to offer the Serb a new deal but may have to trigger a one-year extension in his contract considering the club's ongoing injury crisis in midfield.
The 31-year-old is arguably playing some of his best football under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the moment and has started 10 of United's last 14 games.
Matic also scored the winner against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg before being shown a red card last Wednesday.
But Matic, a £40million buy from Chelsea in 2017, admits there has been no talks over a new deal.
He told The Sun: 'My first option is United but if they decide something else, there are solutions.
'And if not, life goes on. I can't tell who is asking for me.
'But when you play at United, many clubs are looking to sign you.'
