Millwall have been charged by the FA after fans allegedly used racist language during their fourth-round FA Cup win against Everton.

Home supporters at the Den were filmed taunting away supporters with racist slurs during the clash - chanting they would 'rather be a P*** than a Scouse'.

An FA statement released on Thursday said: 'It is alleged the club failed to ensure its spectators conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and refrained from using abusive and/or insulting words, which included a reference to race and/or ethnic origin during the Emirates FA Cup tie against Everton on 26 January 2019.'

A Snapchat video from 26 January, that has since been removed from the user's account but was captured by Twitter user @AnwarEllis, included the derogatory lyrics about Muslims.

Other clips from the match show the same set of supporters, sat in the Dockers Stand, chanting 'your mum's a slag' and 'your dad's a nonce'.

Millwall have since closed that area of the ground in The Dockers Stand, where the chanting was filmed.

Reacting to the clip, anti-discrimination group Kick It Out condemned it and called for action to be taken.

In a statement, they said: 'The racist chanting heard from some Millwall supporters during yesterday's match is disgusting and typical of mass discriminatory chants that continue to go unpunished.'

Kick It Out added that it had spoken to the Football Association about the incident, and said the governing body is investigating.

'We reiterate our message: racial hatred - and all forms of discrimination - have no place in society, especially not in 2019. There is no reason why a footballing environment should be the exception to this rule.

'Kick It Out wants to see the relevant authorities take swift, firm and decisive action against the perpetrators.'

The club itself responded with a statement the morning after the tie, confirming that anyone identified joining in the racist chants would be banned from the Den for life.

'Millwall Football Club is aware of, and extremely disappointed by, a video circulating online displaying alleged racist chanting during Saturday's victory over Everton,' it read.

'The club will, as is commonplace following such incidents, work with all relevant authorities during investigations into the matter and look to identify individuals involved.

'Anyone identified and guilty of such abuse will be banned from The Den for life.'

The chants were just one unpleasant aspect of  a game marred by unsavoury scenes, including a brawl before the game which saw a man slashed with a knife outside Surrey Quays station.

Another saw an Everton supporters bus caught in the crossfire between feuding fans.

According to Vision, the company who owned the coach, there was £10,000 worth of damage done, including a cracked windscreen, three smashed windows and a damaged wing mirror.

Shocking footage of a mass brawl between fans ahead of their clash appeared to show the moment a supporter was cut in the face.

Local residents recorded the disgraceful scenes outside the south-east London station as the two sets of supporters engaged in a mass brawl.

Police officers on horses eventually managed to break up the brawl by using batons as one man walked away with a nasty gash.
