Arsenal fans' hopes of seeing a Bergkamp in their famous red shirt again appear to have been dashed with 22-year-old Mitchel, son of club legend Dennis, reportedly being let go following a trial.

The young midfielder spent the week training at Arsenal's London Colney base with Steve Bould and his Under-23s side.

Bergkamp has been available as a free agent since leaving Dutch second tier side Almere City this summer but Goal report that Arsenal will not make a move for him following his trial period.

He spent his early childhood in London and was spotted out on the pitch in north London in 2006 with his dad at a testimonial game against Ajax.

That was the first game which opened the new Emirates Stadium following the switch away from Highbury.

Given Dennis Bergkamp's success under Arsene Wenger, Arsenal will forever hold special significance to his son, even if he will not follow in his footsteps at this stage.

'My father also played for Internazionale (Inter Milan) and Ajax, two wonderful clubs, but Arsenal feels like home,' the 22-year-old said during in interview with ELF Voetbal in 2019.

'Whether I choose the Emirates or Highbury? I would have preferred to play at Highbury. There are the memories of everything my father has done for the club.'

There is a romanticism to the idea of a son following in the footsteps of his dad at the same club but at Arsenal, and when the dad is Dennis Bergkamp, they are huge shoes to fill.

The Dutchman made 423 appearances for Arsenal in an 11-year run which started in 1995.

Bergkamp, now 51, went on to secure legendary status after scoring 120 goals, winning three league titles and four FA Cups.

His 94 Premier League assists remains, to this day, an Arsenal record.

Having turned his hand to coaching and advisory roles after retiring, Bergkamp was linked with a potential position on Mikel Arteta’s staff.

But no position emerged and now there has been disappointment for Bergkamp Jnr when it comes to carving out his own name in north London.
