Mohamed Salah closing in on ‘unbeatable’ 22-year-old Premier League record

Liverpool reiterate their status as title favourites with a comprehensive 2-0 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Mohamed Salah continued his extraordinary 2024/25 form on Sunday with a goal and an assist in Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Manchester City.

City have been the team to beat in the Premier League for much of Pep Guardiola’s time in England. But this Salah-inspired Liverpool side look to have built an unassailable lead at the top of the league and are intent on making history.

Salah took his league tally for the season to 25 goals and 16 assists, a record that ranks among the finest individual seasons seen in the Premier League. With 11 games remaining, Salah is set to break the single-season PL assist record, which has stood at 20 since the 2002/03 season.

Who holds the Premier League assist record?

The assist record has taken on near-mythical status in recent years, having stood for 22 years. In the 2002/03 season Thierry Henry set the record with 20 assists, a mark that Kevin de Bruyne equalled in 2019/10.

KDB was not the only player who came close to beating the record. Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil started the 2015/16 with an incredible run of production, providing 16 assists in the first half of the season. But the output dried up and he managed just three in the second half of the season, falling just short of the ‘unbeatable’ 20.

Even this season, Bukayo Saka reached ten assists by matchday 13 and looked on-track to challenge the record. He suffered a serious hamstring injury in December and looks unlikely to return this season.

Salah looks like a good bet to finally breach 20 assists and knock Henry off top spot. He’s already set the Liverpool record for most assists in a Premier League season and becomes the first player in league history to register at least 40 goal involvements in two different seasons. Nevertheless, it’s the promise of team titles that is keeping the Egyptian motivated down the stretch.

“I wouldn’t say it’s close. It’s just like, we need another title for sure,” Salah said after the City victory. “Me and the big guys here in the team, we need another title. But yeah, we’ll give it our best and we’ll give it a good shot.”
