Chelsea transfer news: The Blues have been told that they will be overpaying for Moises Caicedo if a transfer worth around £115million is completed

Chelsea will be overpaying for Moises Caicedo if they spend a new Premier League record £115million ($145m) on the Brighton midfielder, former defender Marcel Desailly has said.

Chelsea may well have to go above and beyond Liverpool's offer of £110milion ($139m) which would smash their own record of £106.8million ($135m) that was paid for Enzo Fernandez in January.

Desailly, speaking to BoyleSports, thinks it's too much money but also admits that it might prove to be good value in the long run.

"I respect Moises Caicedo a lot. It’s business," the Frenchman said. "Now you can see many investors are coming to the Premier League to buy players from academies, England and other countries. They know the values.

"So he’s twice the price Zinedine Zidane was in my era! I think fans should stop thinking about fees and salaries of the players, because in 20 years time he’s going to be worth £200million ($253m)! It’s business, and yes it has gone a bit crazy, when you see Ousmane Dembele, Barcelona got him for £150million ($190m) and now they are selling him to PSG for £50million ($64m) so that’s a huge loss."

After Arsenal paid what could rise to £105million ($133m) for Declan Rice and Real Madrid ran that close for Jude Bellingham as well, the market is continuing to rise, especially when it comes to in-demand young players.

10 years ago and Chelsea were 12 months away from signing Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa for a combined £62million ($78m), evidence of just how much fees have changed.
