Mount confident Man Utd can challenge for the Premier League title next season

Mason Mount is confident Manchester United can challenge for the Premier League title next season after an upturn in form under Michael Carrick.

Mount, who joined United from Chelsea in a reported £55m deal in 2023, has won one major title at Old Trafford, lifting the FA Cup under Erik ten Hag two years ago.

The 27-year-old's time with the Red Devils has been plagued by injury, limiting him to just 69 appearances in all competitions, with 30 of those coming from the start.

He has appeared 22 times in 2025-26, registering three goals and one assist, with United's run of results since Ruben Amorim departed taking them to the brink of sealing a return to the Champions League.

Since Carrick's first Premier League game in charge this season, United have won more points than any other side (29), while his nine wins in 13 matches (D2 L2) are already more than Amorim won in his 20 games in 2025-26 (W8 D7 L5).

However, the Red Devils have not won the top-flight title since 2012-13 under Sir Alex Ferguson, though Mount remains optimistic of ending that drought as early as next term.

"I have a goal of winning the Premier League," Mount said. "Obviously, I've won the Champions League already, but can we [win the league?] Yes, I think we can as a group.

"We have to have that kind of mentality. It may seem a little bit far away, but you have to have that mentality to really push yourself as a group.

"We've shown what we can do against the big teams already – Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, you know, so we've done it.

"We've already shown that this season, so we definitely can do it.

"It's about now doing it on a bigger stage in the Champions League and doing it more consistently in the Premier League.

"I'll hopefully be a massive part in that moving forward next season. Yeah, it's a goal: I want to win the Premier League."

Mount is no stranger to major trophies himself, having won three during his time at Chelsea, one of which includes their Champions League success under Thomas Tuchel.

The Opta supercomputer has assigned United a 99.8% chance of returning to UEFA's flagship competition with four games of their Premier League season remaining.

And the first of those league fixtures sees them welcome arch-rivals Liverpool to Old Trafford on Sunday, with Arne Slot's side also aiming to secure their spot in the top five.

United have won just three of their last 19 Premier League games against Liverpool (D9 L7), though are looking to complete the league double over the Reds for the first time since 2015-16 following their 2-1 victory in the reverse fixture in October.
