Jose Mourinho has suffered defeat in just one of his opening league games in charge of a new club - as the Portuguese prepares to take the reins at Tottenham on Saturday at the beginning of a new era.

The 56-year-old's last setback in a first league fixture after taking over a club came 19 years ago when at the helm of Benfica, and since then Mourinho has guided his teams to four victories and three draws in their maiden clashes.

Tottenham travel to West Ham at the weekend to kick-start Mourinho's spell in north London, with last season's Champions League finalists currently languishing in 14th spot.

And supporters of the top flight strugglers have every right to be heartened by the new manager's formidable track record.

On his Premier League debut in the technical area, Mourinho had guided Chelsea to victory over Manchester United in 2004 at Stamford Bridge.

And shortly after being unveiled as the new Inter Milan boss four years later, the enigmatic tactician led his team to a stalemate at Sampdoria on the opening day of the campaign.

Mourinho's first taste of management in La Liga ended in a similar result, before the 'Special One' returned to grace English football once again during his second spell with Chelsea.

The Blues had comfortably eased past Hull 2-0 in 2013, and Manchester United then beat Bournemouth on the south coast in August 2016 after Mourinho was handed the coveted role at Old Trafford.

The outspoken figure had been presented with an uphill task after replacing Mauricio Pochettino on Wednesday, less than a day after his predecessor had been controversially axed.

Despite targeting European football again next term, Tottenham remain 11 points adrift of the Champions League places and were also prematurely knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Colchester.

And Mourinho's will hope to reinvigorate his troops with yet another victory in his first league game in charge of a new club at the London Stadium.

West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini had once again hinted that his rivalry with his opposite number is yet to blow over, and seemed to question Mourinho's choice of playing style in his pre-match press conference.
