Napoli have made a bid for Spanish starlet Gabri Veiga believed to be worth £25.9million.

The midfielder has been linked with Liverpool this summer as Jurgen Klopp's side bid to improve their midfield, but Napoli have made him their prime target.

His release clause is set at £34.5million, but the Italian side are keen to try and get him for cheaper, however face a task to convince Celta Vigo to budge.

The 21-year-old has made 55 appearances in Spain since breaking into his side's first team, netting 11 goals in the process.

According to Fabrizio Romano, however, Celta Vigo have rejected the offer, but negotiations over a potential deal will continue.

Liverpool have been looking to improve their midfield ahead of the new Premier League season, which starts this weekend.

Jordan Henderson and Fabinho have both left the club for the Saudi Pro League, while James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain departed at the end of their contracts.

Alexis Mac Allister arrived from Brighton at the start of the window, while Dominik Szoboszlai also joined from RB Leipzig.

More signings are expected, but the focus on trying to recruit a defensive midfielder has perhaps allowed Napoli to pounce and bid for Veiga.

Veiga burst onto the scene last season in LaLiga, also starring for Spain as they reached the final of the European Under 21 Championships, losing to England in the final.

He's tipped for a big future in the game and Serie A could be his next destination with Napoli expected to persist with negotiations until a deal is agreed.

It's possible Celta Vigo will hold out for the Italian champions to pay the 21-year-old's release clause with the intent of recruiting as much money as possible for a talent from their academy.
