Neil Etheridge was the Premier League's top fantasy football goalkeeper this weekend

No one saw Neil Etheridge's man of the match performance against Newcastle United coming - not even the man himself.

The Cardiff goalkeeper  kept a clean sheet in just his second Premier League match, topped with an injury-time penalty save from Brazilian winger Kenedy.

The performance ensured Etheridge was the top performing goalkeeper  in the Premier League's official fantasy football game with 13 points.

As well as points for his clean sheet and penalty save, Etheridge earned three bonus points for being the best player in the match.

It left many fantasy football enthusiasts fuming that they had left Etheridge on the bench, having signed him on cheap.

Etheridge can hardly criticise anyone for lacking faith in him though, as it was revealed on Twitter he had left himself on the bench too.

To make matters worse, Etheridge favoured Manchester United's David de Gea, who shipped three goals in their loss at Brighton. When this was pointed out to him, Etheridge simply responded by tweeting: 'Haha.'

Etheridge, 28, appeared 45 times in his debut season for Cardiff last term as they won promotion to the Premier League.

He has kept his place in goal for the first two games of the season despite the summer arrival of Alex Smithies from QPR.
