New rules, vintage kits, Van Persie & 5 THINGS YOU MISSED from Community Shield

The Community Shield is rarely a classic, but English football’s annual curtain raiser at least created some major talking points on and off the pitch on Sunday afternoon.

Before the game, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola engaged in a deep chat with Robin van Persie in the dug-out, while Liverpool fans booed the national anthem.

Guardiola then played the role of pantomine villain by becoming the first ever manager to receive a yellow card after his angry reaction to Joe Gomez’s tackle on David Silva.

However, he could at least smile at the result as City won 5-4 on penalties after the game finished 1-1 in normal time.

Sportsmail picks out five bits of action you may have missed at Wembley...

LIVERPOOL FANS BOOING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM

Both sets of fans warmed up their vocal chords before kick-off, with Liverpool fans booing Raheem Sterling and Manchester City responding by heckling a rendition of 'You'll never walk alone'. Bizarrely, after whistling throughout City anthem 'Blue Moon', Reds supporters then booed the national anthem.

GUARDIOLA TAPPING UP ROBIN VAN PERSIE

Well, not quite. Robin van Persie announced his retirement at the end of last season and recently became part of BT Sport's punditry team ahead of the new season. Before kick-off the former Manchester United and Arsenal forward sat down in the dugout for a chat with Guardiola, with the pair laughing and joking like old friends.

PEP BECOMES FIRST MANAGER TO RECEIVE A YELLOW CARD

Guardiola is no stranger to a touchline tantrum and it took him less than 45 minutes to blow a gasket at Wembley. Incensed by Joe Gomez’s tackle on David Silva, Guardiola angrily remonstrated with the fourth official and was booked for his protests by referee Martin Atkinson. The yellow card saw him make a small piece of history as he became the first manager ever to be booked following a rule change which allows refs to book managers for dissent.

MANCHESTER CITY’S VINTAGE KIT

City players wore a special shirt to mark their 125th anniversary. The vintage strip was free of sponsorship, with gold lettering underneath the club crest detailing the landmark occasion. The inside of the neck also featured a copy of the founding document signed by Joshua Parlby, who managed City in the 1890s.

REFEREE STOPS PLAY AFTER BALL HITS HIM

Another rule change implemented ahead of the new season has seen referees instructed to halt play if they’re struck by the ball. In the second half referee Martin Atkinson got in the way of a stray Liverpool pass and brought play to a halt, much to the annoyance of City fans who were probably unaware of the new rule.
