Newcastle are considering a renewed approach for England U21 goalkeeper Trafford

Newcastle sporting director Paul Mitchell watched Burnley's James Trafford at the weekend, with the club considering a renewed approach for the England Under 21 goalkeeper.

Mail Sport can reveal that Mitchell was in attendance at the Stadium of Light on Saturday as the Clarets were beaten 1-0 by Sunderland.

We reported in June that the Magpies had unsuccessfully tabled an offer of around £16million for the 21-year-old.

Discussions had been ongoing but it is understood Burnley wanted a fee north of £20million. Personal terms were not thought to be an issue at the time.

Newcastle have since signed two keepers this summer in veteran John Ruddy and Odysseas Vlachodimos from Nottingham Forest. It leaves them with five on their books, adding to Nick Pope, Martin Dubravka and Mark Gillespie.

However, Vlachodimos was only signed in June as part of the deal that saw Forest agree to pay £35m for Elliot Anderson as Newcastle battled to avoid a 10-point deduction for breaching PSR rules.

The Greek has not been used since and, tellingly, was not part of the squad at Bournemouth on Sunday even though Dubravka was missing because of concussion.

Vlachodimos could now leave on loan - Anderlecht are interested - and Dubravka’s future is also uncertain.

We understand Eddie Howe is a big admirer of Trafford and wants another keeper to rival Nick Pope for the No.1 jersey.

If there are outgoings, it is likely that a move for Trafford will be accelerated.
