Newcastle are falling short in their bid to sign Brighton centre back Dan Burn.
Talks are ongoing after they improved on their initial £8m bid but the Magpies are still shy of Brighton's valuation.
The towering left sided centre back is a boyhood Newcastle fan and has just 18 months left on contract.
As Sportsmail reported on Tuesday, the 29-year old Burn has emerged as a target for Newcastle as they scramble to sign two centre backs before Monday's deadline.
Newcastle also asked about Nat Phillips on Monday but Liverpool want £15m.
Talks are continuing with Lyon for midfielder Bruno Guimaraes after they made a restructured bid for the Brazilian.
The 24-year old Brazil international has been courted by Juventus and Arsenal in recent months, and his former club Athletico Paranaense are due a 20 per cent sell on.
Guimaraes is one of the best midfielders in Europe and his signing will represent a real coup for Newcastle's owners who moved for him after deeming Brighton's Yves Bissouma too expensive.
