The Newcastle fan who collapsed while watching the club’s Premier League match against Tottenham was discharged from hospital on Tuesday.

Medics in the crowd rushed to help the elderly supporter, later named by the club as 80-year-old Alan Smith, after he suffered a cardiac arrest at St James’ Park on Sunday, October 17.

Tottenham players Eric Dier and Sergio Reguilon were praised for alerting referee Andre Marriner, who stopped the game.

The club said the supporter 'required four stents inserted to aid his recovery'.

In a statement, Newcastle added: 'Alan's son, Paul, said the medical staff have been amazing during his stay and his family wish to thank every one of them.

'Alan will spend the next two to four weeks building up his strength at home and hopes to be back at St. James' Park at the end of November or the beginning of December.

'He is looking forward to seeing family and friends over the next few days and sends his appreciation to everyone who has wished him well.'

Newcastle fan and A&E doctor Tom Pritchard and his friend Matty helped Mr Smith recover by giving him CPR and defibrillator treatment in the East Stand

Prichard, who works in the A&E department of a north-east hospital and also part-time at Middlesbrough's academy, appeared on BBC Breakfast on Monday morning to describe his actions and how it unfolded.

'It all happened so quickly, to be honest,' said Dr Prichard, who has been a season ticket-holder at Newcastle for 14 years.

'I was sat in the Gallowgate End and I could see something was happening with the fans. They were calling over the stewards and first-aiders, and I could see a lady there doing CPR on someone.

'As an A&E doctor I thought I'd better go and offer a hand if I can, and see what help I can give here. So I just got up and went over to help, really.'
