Newcastle given boost with DeAndre Yedlin set for quick return to training

Newcastle defender DeAndre Yedlin has avoided a lengthy lay-off after initial fears his season could be in danger following a knee injury sustained against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

The USA international left St James' Park on crutches after limping from the field during the closing stages of the 2-1 defeat and manager Rafa Benitez did not sound positive on the prognosis afterwards.

However, it was confirmed on Wednesday that Yedlin will return to training in the coming days after tests revealed no long-term damage.

The news is a boost for Benitez, who had feared losing his first-choice right-back for a prolonged period.

That would have meant Javi Manquillo deputising in the position, despite the Spaniard having started just three league games in 2018.

The Toon are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Cardiff City knowing that three points will be vital in a nightmare start to the season where they face four of the big six clubs in their first five games.

Following on from Cardiff, Newcastle host Chelsea before visiting Manchester City then returning to St James' Park to take on Arsenal.
