Newcastle have launched talks in an effort to sign Crystal Palace and England star Marc Guehi.
The former Chelsea defender has been identified as a priority target for Eddie Howe’s men. Guehi has shone for Palace over recent seasons and was arguably England’s best player at this summer’s Euros.
And Newcastle are now attempting to seal a big-money deal for his signature. According to The Athletic, they have opened negotiations with Palace and are the first team interested to engage in meaningful talks.
Guehi has just two years remaining on his contract at Selhurst Park and a £60m price-tag has previously been touted. Arsenal were also reportedly interested but abandoned their interest in the defender after finding out Palace’s lofty demands.
Should a deal be thrashed out, Guehi would become Palace’s second big-money sale of the summer transfer window. Michael Olise has joined German giants Bayern Munich, with the Eagles signing former Watford man Ismaila Sarr from Marseille as a replacement.
Speaking about Guehi’s future back in May, Palace boss Oliver Glasner said: “I'm always optimistic as all these players have contracts with Crystal Palace. It’s May and many situations can change.
“Nothing is 100 per cent but he’s under contract, he [Guehi] is a good player, he’s our captain, so I'm very positive and confident that he plays for Crystal Palace.”
Meanwhile, Guehi has recently spoken out after launching social media accounts. He did not address any transfer speculation though, instead focusing on England’s run to the Euro 2024 final.
Guehi wrote: “Had some time away to reflect on this summer & it was about time I came on here to say thank you! It was amazing to experience a senior tournament with England, & although we fell short, I have no doubt we’ll be back.
“This is a special group. I thank God for the opportunity. We had some amazing moments during the tournament & you fans carried us through some tough moments.
“Lastly, a huge thank you to Gareth for everything you did for me. I wouldn’t be here without your trust & belief in me, wishing you all the best in the future! Thank you - MG.”
His potential future employers Newcastle have already been busy this summer. They have signed Lewis Hall, Odysseas Vlachodimos, Lloyd Kelly and John Ruddy on permanent deals.
