Newcastle's Joe Willock is a doubt for Wolves and Bruno Guimaraes could take his place

Newcastle midfielder Joe Willock is a doubt for Friday's visit of Wolves with a knee injury - but there is hope of Kieran Trippier returning before the end of the month.

Willock played the full game during Sunday's 5-1 defeat at Spurs but Sportsmail understands he was hampered by a knee problem.

The 22-year-old will be assessed over the next 24 hours and Eddie Howe could choose to rotate with Bruno Guimaraes in contention for his first home start.

His fellow Brazilian, Joelinton, was forced to withdraw because of illness at the weekend, and his loss disrupted Newcastle's midfield as Spurs scored four times in the second half.

Howe revealed after that game that a scan on Trippier's broken foot last week was not as positive as they had hoped.

Sportsmail understands the England defender will miss the next two home matches against Wolves and Leicester but, should a further scan return better results, he will be back in contention before the end of April.

At present, there is not a feeling of Trippier's season being over, even though Newcastle are mindful not to push him too quickly.

Callum Wilson, meanwhile, is still hoping to feature in the final few matches of the campaign, although there is a strong chance Newcastle will choose not to risk the striker given the nature of his Achilles and calf injury first suffered in December.

The Magpies have lost their last three away from Tyneside but remain nine points clear of danger ahead of three games on the spin at St James' Park.
