Newcastle's Matt Ritchie ruled out for two months with ankle ligament damage

Newcastle manager Steve Bruce has confirmed his side will be without winger Matt Ritchie for two months, after the player suffered ankle ligament damage against Leicester.

Bruce has slammed the 'horror tackle' by Foxes midfielder Hamza Choudhury, while also confirming Allan Saint-Maximin is facing three to five weeks out with a hamstring strain.

The news is a concern to Newcastle supporters, with a total of 10 players now in the treatment room following recent injuries.

Asked about Ritchie ahead of Newcastle's Premier League clash with Watford, Bruce said: 'It's not great news. We think he's going to be maybe two months, eight weeks. There is ankle ligament damage too, bone bruising, cuts. The kid, as I said to you the other night, was a mess.

'Thankfully it's not six months, but it's bad enough when it's the best part of eight weeks.

'These tackles are the ones that damage you. Let's hope the young lad learns from it because he's a good player, the kid.

'But obviously, it doesn't help us and Matt in particular, who's going to miss at least a couple of months.'

Bruce also offered a bleak update on the situation with Dwight Gayle, who is 'not getting any better' after suffering with a thigh issue.

The Newcastle boss revealed that the striker, who spent last season on loan at West Brom, has been to see yet another specialist but there has been no progress on his recovery.

Record signing Joelinton is expected to be passed fit enough for Saturday's clash with Watford after missing his side's Carabao Cup exit with a hip problem he picked up in the win against Tottenham, while the Magpies are hoping influential playmaker Miguel Almiron will also come through to feature.

Ritchie was not the only casualty from Wednesday night's penalty shootout defeat, with Emil Krafth and Jetro Willems both hobbling off with muscle injuries.

The pair are still to be assessed but could also be out until after the international break.

That is when Bruce is hopeful of having Andy Carroll back to full fitness, with the Magpies' clash against his old club Liverpool at Anfield penciled in as a possible return date.

DeAndre Yedlin is back in training but is not expected to be available for Saturday. Florian Lejeune is still undergoing rehabilitation from an anterior cruciate ligament tear in his left knee.
