'No progression' on new Liverpool contract for Szoboszlai

Dominik Szoboszlai says there has been no progress in talks over a contract extension with Liverpool, though the midfielder remains "relaxed" over the situation.

The Hungary international has been a standout performer in a disappointing campaign for the Reds, who are out of contention for silverware with their ambitions limited to a top-five Premier League finish.

He has provided 21 goal involvements across all competitions in 2025-26, ranking joint-second in their squad for goals (12) and joint-top for assists (nine).

And his latest goal contribution was a hugely significant one as his corner, in the 10th minute of stoppage time, was headed in by Virgil van Dijk to hand Liverpool a 2-1 victory over Everton in the first Merseyside derby at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

That match was Szoboszlai's 100th in the Premier League, and Liverpool are keen to tie him down to fresh terms, with his current deal set to run until 2028.

While there has been no breakthrough in talks, Szoboszlai still views his long-term future on Merseyside.

"There has been no real progression, so I cannot say anything new about my contract situation," Szoboszlai said.

"We have a lot of games to go and I am focusing on that. As you guys know, my contract ends in 2028, so I am ready to go every day, every week, and then let's see.

"Of course, I see myself here in the long term, but it is not really in my hands any more. I love being here. I love the fans. My family is happy.

"I'm completely relaxed. We have five games to go. Then I am going to have a rest, a big one, after my international break. Then we will see."

Liverpool's win over Everton lifted them seven points clear of the teams immediately outside the top five, with the Opta supercomputer now rating their chances of Champions League qualification at 88.9%.
