Brentford 2-Arsenal 0
Arsenal got their 2021/22 Premier League campaign underway on Friday evening.
The Gunners faced a trip across London for a clash with newly-promoted Brentford.
The Bees have lit up the Championship for the last several years with their exciting brand of attacking football, and look set to continue that into the Premier League as well.
Brentford would take the lead in their first-ever PL game after just 22 minutes via a lovely curling effort from winger, Sergi Canos.
Christian Norgaard then put the result beyond doubt after 73 minutes, earning Brentford a historic win that will live long in the club’s memory:
Norgaard reveals Brentford’s plan
On the back of their first-ever Premier League victory, Brentford’s second goalscorer of the day, Christian Norgaard, has revealed the Bees’ plan that saw them eventually beat Arsenal 2-0.
And, according to Norgaard, Brentford’s plan was focused on Arsenal’s midfield, closing down their players like Granit Xhaka:
“If you look at our midfield, it is not the most offensive so it was already quite defensive and compact, but it is mobile.
“Our plan was to close down the middle where they have good players like Granit Xhaka.”
And whilst Norgaard admitted that Arsenal got too much space in that area sometimes, they closed it down for the whole game and it clearly worked well:
“Although sometimes they did get a bit too much space and created dangerous moments through Emile Smith-Rowe, we closed it down the whole game.
“That was one very small achievement in comparison to the whole season but we were already confident before this game and that confidence just got boosted.
“We could have played even better. It was a good start.”
