Nottingham Forest and Wolves charged by the FA after tensions spilled over in the League Cup

Nottingham Forest and Wolves have been charged by the Football Association for a disciplinary breach following a mass brawl at the end of their Carabao Cup quarter-final last Wednesday.

The incident occurred after Forest had won a penalty shootout to secure their path to the last four and a fracas broke out between both sets of players, forcing stewards to run onto the City Ground pitch to intervene.

Morgan Gibbs-White, himself a former Wolves player, and Jack Colback had both celebrated wildly in front of the away end which appeared to aggravate the visitors.

Renan Lodi also appeared to stick his tongue out at the visiting supporters as scenes became increasingly fractured following the conclusion of the shootout.

An FA statement read: 'Nottingham Forest FC and Wolverhampton Wanderers FC have been charged with breaching FA Rule E2O.1 following their EFL Cup match on Wednesday 11 January 2023.

'It's alleged that both clubs failed to ensure their players and/or benches conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and/or refrained from productive behaviour after the final whistle.'

'Nottingham Forest FC and Wolverhampton Wanderers FC have until Thursday 19 January 2023 to provide their responses,' they added.

Steve Cooper, the Nottingham Forest manager, was asked about the incident prior to his side's game against Leicester on the weekend.

The Welshman said he was not aware of what happened - and made clear that any potential bad feeling had evaporated, revealing he spoke to some of the visitor's staff following the game.

'I haven't had chance to assess it, to be honest. I am not sitting on the fence too much, I just haven't (had the opportunity to assess it), because it has been a quick turnaround, 12 hours or something, and I have been more focused on the Leicester game,' he said.

'To be fair, everything was calm in the tunnel after and I know some of the Wolves staff and we spoke about the game, so there was nothing that went on after whatever went on on the pitch. I apologise for not giving you something, but I don't want to say something because I am not aware of what happened.'

It is the latest in a series of incidents between the two clubs that have, surprisingly perhaps, sought to create an element of tension when they meet.

Following Wolves' beating of Cooper's side back in the autumn, they posted a mock up photo of a tree stump with the words 'Notts Forest' behind. That came in response to Forest's own social media account posting a photo of Emmanuel Dennis playing with wolf cubs prior to the game.
