Nottingham Forest splashing the cash to stay in the Premier League

Nottingham Forest endured 23 painful years outside the Premier League. Now back in the big time, they're clearly determined to stay there longer than just one season.

The level of spending on new players has taken many fans by surprise and while that is absolutely no guarantee of success, Forest clearly won't die wondering.

Manager Steve Cooper was promised a kitty of £50million after they secured promotion but owner Evangelos Marinakis has sanctioned over £70m of spending already - and they aren't done yet.

Forest are now weighing up a deal for Watford striker Emmanuel Dennis, who scored 10 Premier League goals despite their relegation last season. Watford want £25m for him, pushing that level of spending closer to nine figures.

The City Ground club also want another winger and another attacking midfielder to bolster squad depth and are in talks with former Manchester United player Jesse Lingard.

There was excitement when Lingard posted an Instagram picture aboard a private jet and fans tracked his flight from Manchester to London, believing he was off to meet Marinakis for talks. Mind you, he's also linked with West Ham.

On Wednesday it was reported Lingard's representatives want £10m for finding him his next club and the player has been offered a deal worth £200,000-a-week.

With 10 players already through the door, Dennis and Lingard could take Forest's summer acquisitions to a round dozen with not a great deal recouped so far in sales.

Goalkeeper Brice Samba was sold to Lens, bringing in £4.3m, but every other first teamer to leave has been released for nothing.

What's certain is that the Forest side that resumes top-flight life at Newcastle on August 6 will be very different in complexion from the one that beat Huddersfield 1-0 to win May's Championship Play-off final at Wembley.

One obvious reason is that a core of players from the promotion team were only on loan - Djed Spence is now a Tottenham player, James Garner could make a breakthrough at Man United, while Philip Zinckernagel and Keinan Davis were borrowed from Watford and Aston Villa respectively. Samba has since departed.

Cooper has a delicate balancing act ahead.

He will want to be loyal to the core of players who helped end Forest's lower league purgatory but also ensure they are best equipped for the Premier League by integrating the newcomers.

England international Dean Henderson is a solid replacement for Samba between the sticks, even if he might not bring quite the same colour and character as the Congolese stopper.

Henderson will be desperate to impress in order to rubber-stamp his inclusion in England's World Cup squad and show United what they're missing as he finally gets a run of first-team football.

In defence, Forest have strengthened with the signings of Moussa Niakhate from Mainz and Giulian Biancone from Troyes.

Niakhate, whose deal could be worth up to £13m, could slot into the back three in place of Steve Cook. But given Cook's extensive Premier League experience with Bournemouth, he shouldn't be dispensed of too lightly.

Joe Worrall could be pushed by Biancone but is likely to keep his spot and could well be skipper for the campaign ahead, while Scott McKenna won the club's player of the year last season.

There will be change in the wing-back positions. Neco Williams, who cost £16m to buy from Liverpool, is set to be afforded licence to rampage down the right and the 21-year-old could be the ideal successor to the very impressive Spence.

On the left, Omar Richards, a £10m signing from Bayern Munich and at Reading before that, will be keen to hit the ground running in English football once again.

Between them, you'd imagine academy graduate Ryan Yates will keep his place and he could be paired with Lewis O'Brien, who completed his move from Huddersfield alongside Harry Toffolo on Wednesday.

The attack may have to be remodelled slightly to accommodate Dennis if Forest get the deal over the line.

There was a huge sigh of relief when homegrown star Brennan Johnson committed to a new four-year contract earlier this month and he'll be champing at the bit to be unleashed on Premier League defences.

Johnson is a versatile forward and could easily assume a No 10 position in behind the two forwards; Dennis and another summer arrival, Taiwo Awoniyi.

Former Liverpool player Awoniyi netted 20 goals last season as Union Berlin achieved a remarkable fifth place finish in the Bundesliga, earning qualification to the Europa League.

It's little wonder therefore that Forest needed to break their club record to buy him for £17m.

Given that, he is highly likely to be a first choice up front, whether he partners Dennis, Johnson or someone else.

Forest will play eight fewer league games in the Premier League compared to the Championship but the step up in quality and intensity has seen them wisely seek reinforcements in almost every area.

They haven't been afraid to splash the cash and come back into the top-flight prepared to give everything to finish 17th or higher.

Only time will tell if this lavish outlay keeps Forest up. Many have spent similar amounts in the past and failed.
