Mats Hummels has extended his contract by another year until 30 June 2024 shortly before Dortmund's Mainz clash which is decisive for the Bundesliga title race.
Hummels joined BVB in the 2007/08 season and played entirely at Borussia until his three-year chapter at FC Bayern (2016-2019), he returned to BVB in 2019.
The 2014 World Cup winner won Bundesliga title with Dortmund in 2011 and 2012, and his third Bundesliga championship in the black and yellow jersey could come on Saturday and Bayern's Bundesliga reign could be ended.
BVB boss Hans-Joachim Watzke:
I'm delighted that Mats Hummels will stay at Borussia Dortmund for another year. He identifies a lot with our club. BVB and Mats simply belong together.
Mats Hummels:
"Everyone knows how much fun I enjoy playing at Signal Iduna Park with our amazing fans. I didn't take the decision lightly. It was a long balancing process. Now, at the end of the season, I can say that I'm really up for another year. However, the focus should immediately get back on Saturday's game against Mainz. We still have 90 intense minutes ahead of us. After that, we hope to be able to celebrate something big together."
