Marco van Ginkel has signed a new one-year contract at Chelsea to extend his stay at the club to eight seasons, despite not playing for the Blues in six years.
The 27-year-old was due to be out of contract at Stamford Bridge this summer but he has now put pen to paper on a new 12-month deal.
Van Ginkel has failed to make the grade at Chelsea, having been shipped out on various loan spells while injury problems have also impacted his time at the club.
Current manager Frank Lampard was still a player at the club when Van Ginkel arrived from Vitesse Arnhem for a fee of £8million.
He has made just four first-team appearances for the Blues since signing and has turned out more for the club's under-23 side, playing eight times for the youth team.
The Dutchman briefly caught the eye in his debut season before a cruciate injury in his second month of action stopped his progress in is tracks.
He then spent the next season on loan at AC Milan and was a regular for the Serie A giants before playing for both Stoke and PSV Eindhoven in 2015/16, helping the Dutch side win the title over Ajax on the final day.
Van Ginkel spent two more seasons in Eindhoven and managed to win a second Dutch title in 2018.
But in the summer of 2018 he was forced to undergo knee surgery and he has yet to return to action.
There were complications after he had an operation on his cruciate meaning he underwent three surgeries in six days to fix a serious and aggressive infection in his knee.
During the height of the UK's coronavirus lockdown, Van Ginkel was pictured training in an empty Stamford Bridge after the club left it open to allow players to work out.
