Danish international Pierre-Emile Højbjerg (28) has joined Olympique de Marseille on a one-year contract on loan, the Ligue 1 side has announced.

He will be arriving from Tottenham Hotspurs, where he has spent the past four seasons, on a loan deal with an obligation to buy.

Hojbjerg, who made 184 appearances for Spurs, will join the Ligue 1 side initially on loan with the agreement including an obligation to buy for £17million.

The Denmark international made 39 appearances in all competitions during Ange Postecoglou's first season in charge, but only 10 were from the start.

Hojbjerg had entered the final year of his contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and is Roberto De Zerbi's fifth signing of the transfer window.

The 28-year-old scored 10 times during his four years with Spurs, one of which came against his new employers in the Champions League to secure top spot in Group D back in 2022.

Marseille had been in the market for an experienced midfielder, especially with Pape Gueye (25) leaving at the end of his contract and Jordan Veretout (31) reportedly for sale. Højbjerg will be looked upon to provide an experienced head in a dressing room that looks to be trending younger.

Marseille had already secured the signatures of Ismaël Koné (22), Lilian Brassier (24), and Mason Greenwood (22), while Bamo Meïté (22) officially joined after his loan was made permanent.

For Højbjerg, after eight years in the Premier League, it appeared that the Danish international was looking for a new adventure. At Marseille, he would be provided with a chance of helping to steer the direction of a new project building under Roberto De Zerbi.
