OFFICIAL: legendary Real Madrid and Spain goalkeeper Miguel Angel dies at 76

Legendary Real Madrid and Spain goalkeeper Miguel Angel has passed away at the age of 76, the club has confirmed.

Angel played for Los Blancos for 18 seasons, collecting a swathe of trophies.

Alongside eight Spanish league titles, he also won two UEFA Cups, five Spanish Cups, and one Spanish League Cup betwen 1968 and 1986.

He was capped 18 times by Spain and turned out for his country at the Argentina edition in 1978 and then in his homeland in 1982.

Angel was also the winner of the Zamora Trophy in 1975/76, an award established by MARCA and given to the goalkeeper with the lowest goals conceded-to-games ratio.

Real Madrid called him 'one of the greatest goalkeepers in our history, a Real Madrid and Spanish football legend.'

A club statement read: 'Real Madrid would like to convey its condolences and sympathy to his wife, María del Pilar, his son Miguel Ángel, his grandchildren Daniela and Mauro, his relatives, his teammates and all his loved ones.

'Miguel Ángel has been connected to Real Madrid almost all of his life. Real Madrid would like to extend his condolences to all Real Madrid fans. May he rest in peace.'

Alberto Cosin, a Spanish football journalist, wrote on X: 'Very sad day for Real Madrid. Miguel Ángel, one of the best goalkeepers in the club's history and teacher of many other goalkeepers when he was Los Blancos' goalkeeping coach, has left us. Fly high just like with your stops.'

One fan wrote: 'A sad day due to the death of Miguel angel, idol of childhood and youth, we all wanted to be a goalkeeper!

'That stoppage in the 78th World Cup in Argentina, we will never forget it, our retinas continue to visualize it eternally!! Have a good trip!! Give a GOL Hug to my father.'

Angel kept a close relationship with his beloved club after retiring. 

After his career, he was a first-team delegate, a goalkeeping coach, and also a director of the Real Madrid Sports Complex, their old training ground.
