Owen and Redknapp blast Benjamin Mendy for his error that led to Wolves' defeat

Michael Owen and Harry Redknapp were scathing in their criticism of Benjamin Mendy after the Manchester City defender's costly error in his side's 3-2 defeat away to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday night.

City were leading 2-1, but Wolves levelled in the 82nd minute courtesy of Raul Jimenez.

The goal owed much to a mistake by Mendy, with the left-back losing the ball in his own penalty area, which allowed Adama Traore to cross for Jimenez.

Owen was to bewildered as to why Mendy didn't simply clear the ball.

Speaking on Amazon Prime, Owen said: 'No one is sure why Mendy is ushering it out there, just clear it. Why can’t he just kick it? He had three opportunities? I don’t know what he was thinking?'

Redknapp also criticised Mendy for his mistake.

Redknapp said: 'What was the left back doing? He got it completely wrong.'

Matt Doherty proceeded to score a late winner for Wolves, with City's already faint title hopes being reduced even further.

City are third in the table, some 14 points adrift of leaders Liverpool, who also have a game in hand.

Pep Guardiola's side were reduced to ten men early on when goalkeeper Ederson was sent off but took the lead when Raheem Sterling scored the re-bound from a penalty that had been retaken.

Sterling made it 2-0 after the break, but Wolves managed to complete an impressive comeback.
