Liverpool struggled to break Napoli down during their 1-1 draw at Anfield on Wednesday night.
An excellent header from Dejan Lovren in the second-half levelled proceedings and cancelled out Dries Mertens well-struck effort in the opening 45 minutes but that was the only time the Reds breached the Italian giant's defence.
The result meant Jurgen Klopp's side missed an opportunity to qualify out of their Champoins League group with one game left to play and will now more or less need to get a result away in Salzburg to guarantee qualification.
Unfortunately during the 90 minutes Fabinho hobbled off with an injury, the seriousness of which was set to be assessed on Thursday, and though it is unclear if that would have kept him out of the upcoming game against Brighton - he is unavailable to play against the Seagulls anyway due to yellow card suspension.
That means Klopp will have to make at least one change to his starting XI for Napoli when Graham Potter's side visit this weekend.
And here we look ahead to who the Reds boss might select when his side are next in action.
Oxlade-Chamberlain an answer
It would be fair to say Liverpool's midfield were a little laboured against Napoli with Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and James Milner starting before the aforementioned Brazilian was replaced by Gini Wijnaldum early on.
They displayed their usual workhorse attitude and were as solid as ever but seemed to be lacking an ability to unlock Napoli's defence.
Of course, it didn't help that Fabinho was injured while the usual balance, poise and attacking outlet of Trent Alexander-Arnold down the right was missing.
Joe Gomez played in the young right-back's place and worked hard but things unfortunately didn't come off for him and he was replaced by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, with Henderson swapping to the right-side of defence.
The Reds were a much more threatening unit with Oxlade-Chamberlain on the pitch and raided forward with more menace almost immediately.
Lovren levelled things up after the midfielder entered the fray and Liverpool smelled a second with an impressive Oxlade-Chamberlain in the thick of things and bombing on alongside the usual front three.
The Champions League has been kind to Oxlade-Chamberlain this term. While his big Premier League moment continues to elude him, he has been a big player for Klopp's Reds on the continent.
Three goals against Genk in the last two outings kick-started his season after that career-threatening knee injury.
Once more he was bright, inventive and full of purpose against Napoli and with Fabinho missing that could could open the door for him against Brighton at the weekend.
Gomez the question
What to do with Joe Gomez?
Clearly the young defender is still getting back to his best at Liverpool and taking time to rehabilitate since returning in April from the broken leg suffered almost five months earlier.
Against Napoli he was selected to play at right-back with Trent Alexander-Arnold among the substitutes.
Gomez was solid defensively against Carlo Ancelotti's side but could not emulate his England team-mate going forward and in fairness, what defender in world football even could?
The centre-back was asked to do a job that went against his natural game but it was clearly Klopp's desire to give Gomez more game time and get him match ready by building up his confidence.
And, of course, Gomez will welcome the opportunity of minutes after so long out but the real question is where to play him.
He has played in centre-back twice and at right-back twice in the Champions League and his one start against Norwich in the Premier League opener this season saw him feature in the middle too.
Gomez's best game is played in the heart of defence and alongside Virgil van Dijk. At the start of last season, the pair looked unstoppable.
However, since he was sidelined Joel Matip and then Dejan Lovren stepped up to remind Klopp of their talents and force themselves into the Liverpool manager's plans.
And right now with Matip being injured and Lovren playing so well, it does not seem likely that Gomez will return to play in the middle and that presents Klopp with a headache - albeit not a horrible one - because Alexander-Arnold will ultimately continue at right-back for the foreseeable future.
It appears his solution right now is to reintegrate Gomez during Liverpool's European run but there could be chances against, with all due respect, more comfortable domestic opponents over the upcoming busy month for the defender to rediscover his talent at centre-back.
