Mesut Ozil has teased Fenerbahce fans about a potential move from Arsenal, claiming they are the 'biggest club' in Turkey during a Twitter Q&A on Monday night.
Ozil's time at Arsenal is coming to an underwhelming end after he was exiled from manager Mikel Arteta's Premier League and Europa League squads this season.
The German, the club's highest paid player on £350,000-per-week, has not played since the coronavirus pandemic stopped football in its tracks last March.
And he teased fans on Sunday when he told fans that he would reveal all about his past, present and the future on Monday evening - with many wondering whether he would disclose his next move.
But while he didn't drop a bombshell liked many hoped he would, Ozil did fuel talk of a move to Fenerbahce, with whom he has been heavily linked to recently.
When asked by a fan on Twitter why he likes Fenerbahce, Ozil replied: I grew up as a Fenerbahce fan as a kid in Germany - every German-Turkish person supports a Turkish team when they grow up in Germany.
'And mine was Fenerbahce. Fenerbahce is like Real Madrid in Spain. The biggest club in the country.'
Just before that tweet, Ozil sent Fenerbahce fans into a frenzy by revealing that Kadikoy - where Fenerbahce are based - is his favourite district in Istanbul.
Ozil has been expected to seal a switch to Turkish side Fenerbahce soon with no future in sight at Arsenal with his bumper contract at the Emirates expiring at the end of the season.
It follows reports from the Sun that Ozil is happy to leave north London this month, but only if the club continue to pay the remainder of his salary over the next two years - which would see Arsenal give him £68,000-a-week until the summer of 2023.
Meanwhile, reports in Turkey claimed that both Arsenal and Ozil have entered talks over his remaining wages, which could pave the way for him to move on this January transfer window.
Speaking during his press conference on Monday morning ahead of Arsenal's Premier League clash at home to Crystal Palace on Thursday, Arteta admitted he would not be following Ozil's Twitter Q&A.
'I'm sorry but I don't have Twitter,' Arteta said, when asked if he'll be keeping an eye on the tweets. 'I don't follow Twitter.
'He has done it in the past, it is something he does to engage with his fans and keep everybody informed, so I am not surprised.'
However, Arteta does actually have a verified Twitter account that follows Ozil - last tweeting to celebrate the club's Community Shield success over Liverpool in August.
