Premier League clubs are in talks about a lucrative financial package for struggling EFL teams.
Sportsmail understands top-flight clubs have discussed the notion of providing financial aid to Football League clubs who are struggling to stay afloat as a result of the coronavirus crisis.
There is an acknowledgement from a number of Premier League sides that they have a duty to help the lower leagues to survive.
A Premier League source said: ‘It is inevitable that we will have to push money down to the other 72 clubs. There’s certainly a willingness to do that.
‘If we don’t, then a few clubs will be gone. The EFL need us to finish the season maybe more than we do.
‘There will be many that struggle if we don’t make a decision soon, or more importantly play.’
The amount will run into millions of pounds, but a figure is still to be decided.
Premier League clubs are facing up to a mammoth £340million rebate to broadcasters, even if the season is concluded, which could have an impact on how much EFL clubs might receive.
League Two clubs have already indicated their desire to curtail the season in a bid to save themselves from further financial woes caused by putting on matches without supporters.
There is a similar feeling among a number of League One sides with regards to ending the season prematurely.
And while the Championship are hopeful of reviving the season, there are a number of clubs in the second tier who are facing hugely uncertain financial futures.
Indeed, a number of Championship clubs are struggling to pay wages at the end of this month.
