PLAYER RATINGS: Dean Henderson stars in goal for Crystal Palace

  /  autty

Crystal Palace and Everton played at 0-0 draw on Thursday night in the FA Cup, with neither Premier League outfit able to muster up the creativity or clinical touch needed to break the deadlock.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin saw red after a lengthy VAR check for a rash challenge on Nathaniel Clyne, although replays showed that there was minimal contact between the two players.

Dwight McNeil was then substituted late in the game on a stretcher after an apparent ankle injury, with nine minutes added on at the end of the match.

Yet neither side was able to force a winner in the FA Cup Third Round clash, with the two set to renew acquaintances at Goodison Park in the replay.

Here, Mail Sport's Lewis Steele talks you through the players that managed to put on a show at a wet and rainy Selhurst Park, and those who struggled to perform.

Crystal Palace (4-2-3-1)

Goalkeeper:

Dean Henderson - 7.5

Strong hand to deny Danjuma with a chance after 20 minutes as the Everton forward peeled off and created some space in the penalty area.

Rainy conditions saw him fumble a cross or two. Stood tall to save Calvert-Lewin’s chance just after the hour mark.

Defenders:

Nathaniel Clyne - 6

Tough task against the pacy Danjuma but stood up to the task well early on. Got an earful in the second half when his flank was by the away fans due to his former allegiances to Liverpool.

Received a nasty knock after a tackle from Calvert-Lewin in the second half.

Joachim Andersen - 7

A slick passer of the football and Andersen looked to start many attacks for Palace, but those in front of him weren’t up to much. Defended well against Calvert-Lewin and then Beto.

Marc Guehi - 7

Some nice touches as he carried the ball forward out of defence but one pass on 55 minutes, where it went straight out for a goal kick, summed up the drab nature of this game. Always seems to be in the right position defensively.

Tyrick Mitchell - 6

Was not tested as much as he might have feared against McNeil, on the opposite wing to usual, as Mitchell provided a decent outlet with lots of running.

Midfielders:

Chris Richards - 6

Annoyed team-mate Lerma early on for slow passes but grew into the game with some nice touches in tight areas.

Matheus Franca - 7

Had some promising moments early on, peeling off the right-hand side on his first start for the club after a summer move from Flamengo.

Nearly picked out Mateta late in the first half. Faded as the game went on and was substituted on 71 minutes.

Eberechi Eze - 7 (BOOKED)

Such a gifted footballer and makes Palace tick. It was a shame, therefore, to see him throw himself to the ground with an awful dive that ended up in Eze shown a yellow card after 13 minutes.

Had a good effort on 50 minutes after some decisive dribbling.

Jeffrey Schlupp - 6.5

Had a nice moment after 35 minutes when he nearly turned a cross into a goal - with the help of Tarkowski - but it was cleared at the back post.

Striker:

Jean-Philippe Mateta - 6.5 (BOOKED)

His most important contributions early on were in a defensive sense, with one vital headed clearance in his own penalty area and also stopping Everton’s midfielders have time on the ball.

Substitutes:

Naouirou Ahamada (for Franca 71) - 6

Will Hughes (for Schlupp 71) - 6

Odsonne Edouard (for Clyne 84)

David Ozoh (for Lerma 84)

Not used: Remy Matthews, James Tomkins, Jairo Riedewald, Malcolm Ebiowei, Tayo Adaramola.

Everton (4-2-3-1)

Goalkeeper:

Joao Virginia - 7

His first appearance with the senior team this season after sitting on the bench for every other game.

Good handling and distribution, including a strong stop to deny Eze after 50 minutes.

Defenders:

Seamus Coleman - 7

Playing in his 14th FA Cup campaign, one behind Neville Southall for Everton players. Had some nice touches going forward early on.

Made an exceptional tackle on Mateta after 43 minutes.

James Tarkowski - 6.5

Had a scare after 35 minutes when he nearly diverted Schlupp’s cross into his own goal but it narrowly missed.

Many view Tarkowski as an old-fashioned defender but he is adept in possession and often plays many decent passes.

Jarrad Branthwaite - 6.5

Gareth Southgate's assistant manager Steve Holland was in attendance at Selhurst Park and might have been scouting Branthwaite.

Had little to do defensively but still did not put a foot wrong, as has been the theme of his season.

Vitalii Mykolenko - 6.5

Vital clearance off the line after 35 minutes to deny Schlupp’s cheeky dink that deflected off Tarkowski.

Is a willing runner down the left flank and has grown in an attacking sense under Dyche.

Midfielders:

James Garner - 6

Never stopped running in the midfield for Everton but did not impact this game much in an attacking sense.

Will be needed in the next month with Doucoure only returning to training this week and Idrissa Gana Gueye going to the Africa Cup of Nations.

Amadou Onana - 6

Had a decent chance on 67 minutes when Tarkowski diverted a corner back across goal but the Belgian midfielder, despite jumping the highest, could not keep his header down and nodded the ball over.

Worrying moment when he went down injured but looked OK afterwards.

Dwight McNeil - 6.5

On the opposite wing to usual with Danjuma playing on the left and this was one of McNeil’s quieter nights in an Everton shirt.

Switched out to the favoured wing in the second half and grew into the game with some more sharp moments. Sad ending with an injury forcing him off.

Jack Harrison - 6

Everton being without Abdoulaye Doucoure has been highlighted in recent weeks and, though Harrison has not done much wrong, it feels like the former Leeds man is better off playing out wide. Smashed a shot over in stoppage time.

Arnaut Danjuma - 7

Was the most dangerous player on the pitch in the early exchanges, pulling one shot into the side-netting and seeing another well saved.

Faded somewhat in the second half but had another big moment to score on 74 minutes but fired straight at Henderson.

Striker:

Dominic Calvert-Lewin - 6 (SENT OFF)

His goal drought will soon become a negative talking point but the striker has been putting in decent shifts in the team regardless.

Had a good sight of goal on 62 minutes but his shot was weak and easily saved by Henderson. Nasty challenge on Clyne in second half.

Substitutes:

Beto (for Danjuma 80)

Andre Gomes (for McNeil 89)

Not used: Jordan Pickford, Nathan Patterson, Michael Keane, Mackenzie Hunt, Ben Godfrey, Lewis Dobbin, Youssef Chermiti.
