PLAYER RATINGS: Sevilla's Bono excelled while Aaron Wan-Bissaka struggled for Manchester United

  /  autty

Manchester United were knocked out of the Europa League at the semi-final stage as they were beaten 2-1 by Sevilla in Germany.

Bruno Fernandes' penalty put United in the ascendancy but Sevilla levelled through Suso before Luuk de Jong scored the winner for the Spanish side with 12 minutes remaining.

Sportsmail's Jack Gaughan assesses the players from both sides.

Manchester United (4-2-3-1)

David De Gea – 6

Hardly anything to do as United dominated much of the game but ended up conceding twice.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 5.5

Good in the one-on-one duel, less so when Sevilla doubled up to outnumber him. Questionable positioning for Sevilla’s second.

Victor Lindelof – 5.5

Intelligent defensive display for the most part, but switched off as Luuk De Jong poached.

Harry Maguire - 6

United’s captain kept Youssef En-Nesyri relatively quiet. Might wonder about his role in Suso’s goal.

Brandon Williams – 5.5

Slightly too narrow and didn’t check his blind spot for Sevilla’s equaliser. Needed help.

Fred – 6.5

Full of running and nimble when picking pockets but lacked that quality in the final third.

Paul Pogba - 7

A few positive glimpses, particularly one raking pass for Marcus Rashford just before half-time.

Mason Greenwood – 6.5

So close to providing crucial moments that would turn the semi-final on plenty of occasions.

Bruno Fernandes – 7

Top quality penalty, as always, and was the one who could unpick the Spaniards. Did fade though.

Marcus Rashford – 6.5

Threatened moments of magic when breaking at pace but nothing really came off for Rashford.

Anthony Martial – 7

Classy link-up play for United’s penalty and offers much more of a presence these days.

Subs

Juan Mata (for Rashford, 87)

Timothy Fosu-Mensah (for Wan-Bissaka, 87)

Daniel James (for Williams, 87)

Odion Ighalo (for Greenwood, 90)

Manager: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – 6

United were set up to get the best out of their speedsters but substitutions were not forthcoming when required.

Sevilla (4-5-1)

Bono – 8.5

No-nonsense display by the goalkeeper, who completed a number of big saves without fuss.

Jesus Navas – 7

Rashford was in and out of the game and that is a compliment to converted right back Navas.

Jules Kounde – 6.5

Definitely the more composed of Sevilla’s centre halves. The 21-year-old has a very bright future.

Diego Carlos - 5

Dived in too often during the sort of performance that may put off high-profile suitors.

Sergio Reguilon - 7

Gallant running up and down the left and represented a real threat going forward.

Suso – 6.5

Smart finish for his goal but the former Liverpool winger’s contribution was barely noticeable thereafter.

Ever Banega – 6.5

Usually good use of the ball, although did play his team into trouble on occasion.

Fernando – 8

Quietly efficient, allowing others to have more influence. Made some huge defensive blocks.

Joan Jordan - 7

Moved through the gears on the ball. Strong in the tackle and drove Sevilla forward.

Lucas Ocampos - 6

Often drifts into troubling areas and valued the attacking instincts of his left back.

Youssef En-Nesyri - 5

On the periphery for much of the game. Just two goals in his last 15 appearances now.

Subs

Munir El Haddadi 6 (for Ocampos, 56)

Luuk De Jong 7 (for En-Nesyri, 56)

Franco Vazquez 6 (for Suso, 75)

Nemanja Gudelj (for Jordan, 87)

Manager: Julen Lopetegui - 7

Sevilla enjoyed an element of first-half control and then later hit United on the break.

Referee: Felix Brych (GER) – 7

Got the big decisions right and didn’t entertain playacting from both sides.
