Paul Merson gives priceless reaction after Erling Haaland's penalty miss for Man City

Paul Merson was left in disbelief after Erling Haaland missed a penalty in Manchester City's Champions League quarter-final clash with Bayern Munich on Wednesday night.

City were awarded a spot-kick in the first half when Dayot Upamecano was adjudged to have handled Ilkay Gundogan's shot inside the area. After a lengthy delay, Haaland stepped up but fired his effort well over the bar.

Merson was watching the game in the Sky Sports studio and delivered a priceless reaction as he described the action.

'Haaland, oh he's hit me! He's hit me! He's put it over the bar. I can't believe what I've just seen,' Merson exclaimed, as he pretended to shield his face from the ball after Haaland's wild strike had missed the target.

The former Arsenal star then cheekily asked: 'How many goals has he got!?'

Merson has become known for his reactions to key moments in matches, and was famously unable to contain his excitement when Sergio Aguero netted the last-minute winner against QPR to seal the title for City back in 2012.

This time Merson was watching an unfortunate moment for City, but it still produced a moment of TV gold.

Haaland's penalty miss was only the third time he has failed to score from the spot in his career, and it was the first blot on his record since joining City last summer.

He went some way to redeeming himself in the second half when he put City in front on the night, slotting the ball past Yann Sommer for his 48th goal of the season.

Bayern drew level late on thanks to a penalty of their own that was converted by Joshua Kimmich, but they had left themselves too much to do after losing the first leg 3-0 last week.

City have now moved into the Champions League semi-finals to face Real Madrid in a repeat of last year's dramatic last-four clash that the Spanish side triumphed in before winning the final against Liverpool.
