Penarol chief gives details of Facundo Pellistri transfer to Manchester United

Penarol bosses have revealed details of Manchester United's £10million signing of Uruguayan wonderkid Facundo Pellistri with the Old Trafford club apparently not paying his release clause.

The 18-year-old winger completed his move to United before the transfer deadline on Monday and is expected to go straight into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first-team squad this season.

But according to Penarol secretary Evaristo Gonzalez, United informed the Uruguayan club it went against club policy to pay Pellistri's release clause and instead sent the money directly.

Gonzalez told Uruguayan outlet Referi: 'In the talks with Manchester, at one point they told me: 'Due to the club's policy, we don't pay for release clauses so we send the money to the club directly and you fix that problem.'

The Penarol vice-president Rodolfo Cantino said United will make two payments for Pellistri, one right away and the second next year.

He said: 'Everything was agreed, even the form of payment. There are two payments, one now and the other in July 2021, which we accept because Manchester United are a frontline club.'

Gonzalez added that Penarol asked if they could keep Pellistri a little longer on loan but United rejected the proposal in an indication that he will feature in the coming months.

He said: 'Of course we asked for it, we tried in every way but they argued that they wanted the player now.

'It's normal, when a European team buys a player from you, they make him travel immediately.

'Pellistri goes straight into the first team. He is going to play. In the negotiation they asked me if I could guarantee them if he was in the bubble because they need him.

'Then it will be a matter of the manager if he uses him.'

United signed the teenager after missing out on their No 1 summer target in that position, the England and Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho, and failing in efforts to sign alternatives such as Barcelona's Ousmane Dembele.

Pellistri was born in Uruguay but has a second nationality of Spanish which means United don't have to wait for a work permit.
