Peter Crouch believes that Tottenham fans won't 'tolerate' the side's playing style under Antonio Conte unless it wins them trophies.

The former Spurs striker claimed that his former club have been 'difficult' to watch at times, and insisted that the Italian manager would have to deliver silverware in order to placate supporters.

Conte celebrated his one-year anniversary in charge of Tottenham in their Champions League clash with Marseille on Tuesday night, after leaving then-Serie A champions Inter in the summer of 2021.

The former England striker said: 'The brand of football - if he doesn't deliver on trophies, I think the Tottenham fans aren't gonna tolerate the football that's being played at the moment because it's difficult to watch.

'It has been difficult to watch, and unless there's a trophy at the end of it i don't think they're gonna tolerate it.'

Conte's record at the north London club is largely positive - in 54 games he has won 31 and only lost 14, with an aggregate score of 104-56 in that time.

But his side have been somewhat off the boil of late, losing to both Newcastle and Manchester United, before a 1-1 draw with Sporting and coming from two goals down to beat Bournemouth at the weekend.

And Tottenham's lack of silverware is a well-documented point of interest for all the club's rivals, particularly the more successful sides in London such as Chelsea and Arsenal.

Conte arrived at the club with a wealth of trophy-winning experience, winning the Premier League with Chelsea in 2017 and masterminding four Serie A successes with Juventus (3) and Inter (1) during his time in Italy.

However Rio Ferdinand believes that the club's fans will have to decide whether they are more intent on playing aesthetically pleasing football, or ending the team's well-documented trophy drought, which has reached 14 years now.

The former United defender added: 'What d'you want? Do you want success and maybe take a little bit away from the playing style, or do you want to go back to playing good football and you maybe not win much?

'I think that's the question you've got to ask the fans. But if you're looking at it as a player, I think it's gotta be frustrating, the way they're playing.'
