Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang has said he was 'disgusted' by the Tunisian fans throwing bananas in the direction of Richarlison last month.

In Brazil's 5-1 victory over Tunisia last month in Paris, Richarlison was the victim of a racially aggravated incident that involved bananas being thrown by a section of the crowd.

Speaking to the BBC in an interview released on Saturday, Aubameyang, who himself was the victim of a similar incident in 2018 when a Tottenham fan threw a banana skin at him while playing for Arsenal, spoke of his disgust at the incident and re-emphasised the need for the game to eradicate such incidents.

Averof Panteli, 57, received a £500 fine for the incident as well as being banned from football for four years.

'I was like, OK, how is it possible that [in] 2022 we can still see these type of things. I was disgusted,' he said.

'Sometimes people say, "oh, we are used to it", but no, we cannot. That is not normal. We have to remove it from the game.'

He added: 'Hopefully as soon as possible. We will see.'

Various footballers and institutions came out in support of Richarlison in the aftermath of the incident.

Tottenham released a statement condemning the incidents, writing: 'We are disgusted by the racist abuse of Richarlison at last night's game between Brazil and Tunisia.

'This has no place in football, or anywhere. We stand with you, Richy.'

Meanwhile, the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) issued a statement also condemning the incident which occurred after Richarlison scored Brazil's second goal.

It read: 'Unfortunately a banana was thrown on the pitch towards Richarlison, scorer of the second Brazilian goal.

'The CBF reinforces its position to combat racism and repudiates any manifestation of prejudice.'

Richarlison himself was infuriated by the incident, writing on social media:  'Thanks for the messages and concern, folks! Let's go!

'As long as [the authorities] stay 'blah blah blah' and don't punish, it will continue like this, happening every day and everywhere,' he added.
