Police identify man after possible Son Heung-min racist abuse

Police have identified a man after a possible instance of racist abuse directed at Tottenham Hotspur's Son Heung-min during Sunday's draw with Chelsea.

The incident occurred when Son went to take a corner in the second half of the match and was met by abuse from supporters in the corner of the Shed End.

Footage that has emerged after the game appears to show a racist gesture aimed at Son.

Chelsea are investigating the incident and the Metropolitan Police have now said they have identified a man.

A statement said: “A man has been identified following an incident during the Chelsea v Tottenham game at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, August 14.

“The man attended a south London police station on Wednesday, August 17. He was not arrested at this time but was informed police will be in contact with him as part of this investigation.”

Chelsea released a statement that read: “Chelsea Football Club finds any form of discriminatory behaviour totally abhorrent. It has no place at Chelsea or in any of our communities.

“Chelsea FC has consistently made its zero tolerance position on discriminatory behaviour very clear, yet there are still idiots like this that attach themselves to this club as so-called 'fans', which shames Chelsea FC, our coaches, players, staff and our true supporters.

“We are investigating this incident and, if identified, this individual will face the strongest action from the club.”

The Athletic contacted Tottenham for comment.

In April 2021, Manchester United suspended three season-ticket holders after Son received online abuse following Spurs' 3-1 defeat by the Old Trafford club.

In 2019, a West Ham United supporter was fined for racially abusing Son in a Carabao Cup tie.

Spurs twice came from behind to secure a draw in Sunday's match.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg equalised after Kalidou Koulibaly's first-half opener, before Harry Kane's late header cancelled out Reece James's strike and earned the away side a point.

The FA, meanwhile, are investigating comments made by Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel about referee Anthony Taylor's performance during the match. Tuchel and Spurs coach Antonio Conte have also both been charged by the FA over alleged improper behaviour, after they clashed following the final whistle.

Chelsea travel to Leeds United while Spurs host Wolverhampton Wanderers in the next round of Premier League fixtures.
