Police arrested a Premier League footballer described as being 'tipped for international honours' on suspicion of domestic abuse, according to reports.

The arrest took place back in 2019 after the player's girlfriend rang the authorities, alleging an attack and claiming she received threatening messages at night.

Police seized the star, who isn't named in reports for legal reasons, at his home. He is no longer in a relationship with his accuser.

The matter was settled out of court after the player employed lawyers, with police satisfied that a 'community resolution' had been found.

The Premier League man reportedly paid a five-figure settlement sum to his ex-girlfriend to bury the matter.

A source told the Sun: 'This is quite disturbing, especially coming after the claims about Mason Greenwood.

'In this case, the footballer used his money to get lawyers to sort it out for him and keep it out of the public eye.

'He reached a settlement and that has effectively silenced the girl in question and stopped court action.

'Her claims though were very serious, and included at least one allegation of domestic assault.'

A concerning trend of sinister allegations emerging about footballer's private lives has developed this year, with these revelations the latest.

Greenwood's arrest shocked the footballing world last month after allegations of rape were levelled at the Manchester United starlet, who has also featured for Gareth Southgate's England team.

The forward has been released on bail, with further claims of assault and threatening to kill a woman.

Manchester United, Nike and a host of sponsors have sought to distance themselves from Greenwood.
